My name is Tammy Vasa. I live north of Lincoln, Nebraska. Riding is my passion. And when I'm not riding, I am talking about it on my website, Horsetrailriders.com, or on the Distance Derby site or our list serve, Horsetales. I love to talk and write about as much as I love to ride.
This is my 2nd year in the Distance Derby, hoping to finish out DD 2012 in the Top 10. There are three weeks left, so it's anybody's race right now. I do know that because of the Distance Derby, I rode more miles than I have in the last dozen years. We will finish out around 1,200 miles and a little less than 400 hours. I was lucky enough to ride this past year in seven states, all of those surrounding mine.
Windy, my home-grown, coming 11 year old quarter horse mare is my main mount. She is my {heart} horse. We have shared the trails since she was 3 and have grown together as a team. She tests me, I test her; and I think she loves me as much as I love her. :) It'a a great partnership. I also enjoy putting time on my husband's mare, 5 year old, Fancy. We have 2 other quarter horses, Butter and Blue, and a Belgian-x draft mare, Baby.
I have dabbled in Competitive Trail, sponsor a Trail Challenge for our local Trails Committee but most of all, enjoy loading up and riding and camping with my husband and friends.
I chased the miles for the Derby in 2012. This year, I'll gather them organically. I'm just going to ride!

Wow. Its pretty awesome to be recording only my miles and not everyone else's. Now I know what it feels like to wait for the Leader Board.
I've sure enjoyed seeing all the miles being posted. It is even more fun to read your comments about where you rode and with whom.
My first 2 rides were on Windy. Tonight I did a little time on Fancy. I have to say it was probably one of our A rides. If this is what its like in January, it can only get better.

Had about an hour on Windy this afternoon. Would have liked to have hauled somewhere and chased a few miles but had stuff to do around here. I think she felt as good as I did about getting out. Did a lot of loping - 7 mph average moving speed! Really moved out across the bean field, too. Pip was with me most of the way. Hang on - winter is coming to call again this week.
Had 2.5 hrs butt in saddle time on Thursday doing team sorting. GPS wouldn't work in the indoor arena so no miles to report. But a good time was had by all.
Tammy-did you try your Runtastic ap on the iphone at Chance Ridge? Mine worked in that arena. There are a couple dead spots, it would lose the signal but get it right back.

ReplyDeleteHad a great day with Diane (Team 18) at Two Rivers. I told her that Windy couldn't wait to get in the trailer - I think if she could have opened the door herself, she would have. It was just the two of us, so we could move out quite a bit. There is nothing I love more than galloping down a beautiful trail on my best horse.
We caught a glimpse of spring - it was 54* yesterday but winter is back today. Temp shows 27* with a cold north wind.

Hmmm. Last year miles to date were 235. I'm still running a bit (a lot?) shy. Today I did put some round pen time on Blue but didn't have a GPS on and it wasn't enough to write home about. Just giving pony rides to the nieces.
Great ride on Friday with Diane, our lovely Derby Hostess. We didn't break any speed records but did put some miles on. My friend, Sarah, rode my Fancy. Its always fun to have more than one of my horses out.
Spring is here in the Nebraska but we might catch a glimpse of Old Man Winter again tonight. I think after that, we can drop-kick him out the door.

It rained on our parade. Planned to ride the Saunders County parade on Thursday. Got just about to the place where the people are lining the streets and a storm was brewing. The police officer stopped us and said the parade is over; head for our trailers quick! 70 mph winds coming straight for us. We hightailed it back and got the horses loaded just in time for the downpour. I laughed when I saw my max speed on my GPS: 85.1 MPH. I don't think we went quite that fast nor did we get sucked up in a tornado.

The mileage on the above post was .60. The next is a whopping .32. I did not make my goal of riding every day in Sept. Life got in the way with McCain's sudden departure to the Marines. Taking 2 days to see him off put my own trip prep behind schedule, work behind schedule, house work behind schedule... I know, I am speaking to the choir - we are all busy.

Oops, as I was saying... for me it was menepause. (How do you spell that??) Those hot flashes were making me crazy not to mention almost ill. They were zapping the life out of me. I knew when I went to S Dakota that things had to change. I couldn't deal with heat and hot flashes - the constant sweating. Thank God for good drugs. I feel like I got my life back. Time to make the best of my favorite time of the year.

Hey Tammy, Just wanted to let you know I had my local press shop fix the spelling error by placing a black band over the comp et et itor error. It makes it look like the bottom of the circle. Not sure if you want to suggest it to others so they can still wear their gear. :)
