Bobbie Jo Lieberman-Weber lives in south-central Texas with her husband Kenny, nine horses, two cats, one dog and assorted farm animals.
She’s ridden endurance for over 30 years and also enjoys being a ride photographer. As Managing Editor of trailBLAZER magazine, she loves bringing the latest advances in nutrition, hoof care, saddle fit, conditioning, horse camping and more to a national audience of recreational and competitive trail riders.
Her current main ride is Jazz (Dancers Southern Princess), a 7-year-old Tennessee Walker mare. She also rides a Morgan named Annakate and an Arabian named Rushcreek Caribou.
Already in the habit of using a GPS on every ride, Bobbie Jo looks forward to this new virtual adventure and salutes all those who participated last year and are back in the saddle for another season!
Welcome Bobbie Jo - how cool to have a magazine editor riding with us!! Happy trails :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the warm welcome! We are actually running a story about the Derby in our March issue.

Jan 26 - 13/39 miles in 3:20, with lots of stops to record mileage at trail intersections. Eron Howell and I were measuring trail for the upcoming Heart of the Hills Endurance ride March 2-3. Two black gaited horses - lots of fun! Eron is ride manager. If you live anywhere within shouting distance of the Hill Country State Natural Area (Bandera), come join us! There's a 50, 25 and an Intro Ride of 15 miles with no time limit.
ReplyDeleteCorrection on the entry for January 25: Make that 13.39 miles
ReplyDeleteAnd for Jan 26: Jazz and Bobbie covered 12.39 miles on the orange loop at the Hill Country State Natural Area with Kenny and Annakate.... we were GPSing the course for the upcoming endurance ride. Getting close to having the map finished. Jazz was gaiting like a dream, and learning to canter.
oops - now I messed up the dates.
ReplyDeleteLet's try that again!
The 13.39 miles were on Friday the 25th,
the 12.39 miles were on Saturday the 26th.
YTD Derby totals: 52.63
My spreadsheet shows 52.53 miles MTD. :-)
DeleteDiane
Bobbie, glad you are joining us for this year's Derby.
ReplyDeleteDidn't ride as much this week, actually we didn't ride at all. :-(
ReplyDeleteHere are our weekend results:
Sat Feb 2 - 12.88 miles
Sun Feb 3 - 8.87 miles
weekend total: 21.75
MTD: 74.38
This is so much fun!
16.42 miles today pre-riding our Heart of the Hills endurance trails, a combination of sections of the two loops, with greast trail pals Kenny/Annakate and Eron/Knight. We found some go-arounds that Kenny and Eron will return with chain saws and loppers in the next week to make our trails even smoother.
ReplyDeleteJazz was a good girl today, she is really learning how to canter in balance.
MTD: 90.70 (note to Diane: I just deducted that .10 mile you noted on January 27 in case you hadn't already done so.)
Mid-week miles:
ReplyDelete2-13-13 - 5.43, ranch ride on Jazz with Kenny/AK and Lupe/Twy
2-15-13 - 6.55, ranch ride on Jazz with Kenny/AK and Lupe/Twy
Fun ride, everybody moving out nicely.
Total for these two days: 11.98
Sunday, 2-17-13.... To the Hill Country State Natural Area with Kenny/Annakate, Eron/Knight and other pals. We logged a total today of 16.29 miles in about 3:12 moving time.... we stopped a lot to check out new trails but picked up the pace through the middle of the ride. Warmish day but a cool breeze when the sun ducked under the clouds.
ReplyDeleteTotal this week: 28.27
Total this year: 118.97

ReplyDeleteRanch ride with AK and Twylah... 5.39 miles
ReplyDeleteNew trails looking good!
Twylah is looking very fit these days.
Annakate was barefoot today, Jazz had her boots on.
All three got a lite trim from Kenny.
Saturday February 23:
ReplyDeleteKenny & I covered 21.75 miles at the Hill Country State Natural Area this afternoon. Jazz and Annakate maintained a steady pace throughout with low heart rates. We finished up at dusk, having enjoyed floating through the forest trails to the hooting of an owl and the rising moon, after the setting sun illuminated our shadows one last time with brilliant deep hues. A magical day on the trail!
Total this week: 27.14
ReplyDeleteTotal miles to date: 146.11
Ranch ride with Jazz, Kenny & Annakate. We encountered "the herd" about five miles in. La Nina and Illusion were the most forward; Caribou, Mynta and Twylah maintained a respectful distance. Illusion wanted treats. La Nina wanted to race. But we all survived.
ReplyDeleteTotal miles today: 6.04
Very proud of my Jazz horse this weekend!! Along with my husband Kenny and our Morgan Annakate, we attended the Heart of the Hills endurance ride in the Hill Country State Natural Area. We completed the Limited Distance ride of 25 miles each day, finishing 13th yesterday and 3rd today! Jazz was the first "Non-Arab" to finish the ride and Kenny/AK was first Middleweight. A great, fun weekend on the trail!
ReplyDeleteSaturday March 2nd - 25.00 miles
Sunday March 3rd -- 24.87 miles
total this weekend: 49.87
YTD: 202.02
Great job at the endurance ride! Congrats to Jazz and Kenny/AK on their success!
ReplyDeleteDiane
Thank you Diane!! We are also thrilled to have topped the 200-mile mark this season. Endurance rides and Distance Derby are a great combination. :-)
DeleteAlmost forgot!! We did a little warmup ride on Friday evening, March 1, before Day 1 of Heart of the Hills.
ReplyDeleteMe and Jazz: 2.5 miles
Revised MTD: 204.52
Congrats on reaching 200 and doing so well on the endurance ride! Brenda, Team 14 Messick
DeleteThank you, Brenda!! Lost over a week of riding when I went to California to visit my mom; just back last night and went for a little ride tonight with my husband. Boy am I out of practice. But it's good to be home. :)
DeleteHome from California. Great trip but no riding. :( Back in the saddle for a little 5.05 jaunt around the pasture tonight with Jazz and Kenny/Annakate. It was their first outing since the endurance ride at the beginning of the month. Good to hug the ponies again!
ReplyDeleteTonight: 5.05 miles
We were all packed and ready to head out for the Texas Tango endurance ride this morning when fate intervened. My husband had been working all night to complete some data base work.... at 4 a.m. the data base crashed, and there was no back up! So no Tango this weekend. We soothed our souls with a lovely ranch ride this evening. I tried a Myler combo bit on Jazz and she liked it. Annakate was in a photo shoot earlier in the day for Trail Blazer along with four adorable kids, the grandchildren of a friend. Everyone did great!
ReplyDeleteTotal today: 5.17 miles
13.46 miles at the Hill Country State Natural Area with Jazz and Annakate/Kenny. Hot day, but heart rates stayed low. Tried CorrecTor pad on Jazz for first time; it kept her saddle level, but pad is too large for her and builds heat. May sell it and buy a smaller one. Jazz threw in a big buck heading for the trailer and almost lost me! After the whiplash, I was UP in the air wondering where I would land when my thighs hit the bucking rolls. Thank you bucking rolls!! She gaited like a dream all the way back to the trailer. Ponies enjoyed some nice green grass before we headed home. Lovely day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my page! I hope to meet you on the endurance trail! Sorry you couldn't go on the ride this weekend. Jazz shouldn't be bucking. Bad girl. LOL
ReplyDeleteBrenda (Messick 14)

ReplyDeleteWe're back in the saddle!! Doc said go for it, just be careful.
ReplyDeleteWonderful ride on the ranch today 3.7 miles. Just in time for hot/humid Texas weather to kick in. Riding is good for the soul. So good to be back! Looks like you guys have been doing a whole lotta riding. That is good.......
Another great ride today, I didn't even think about my shoulder/arm. Jszz gaited right along in a nice rack. Not quite as hot as yesterday, but plenty warm. Yihaw!

Finally made it back to the Hill Country trails on Saturday the 31st. We covered 10.91 miles on a hot (mid-90s) and humid Texas day. Recent rains washed a new crop of rocks onto many trails. But it was good to be back!!
ReplyDeleteMTD: 280.00
Jazz and I rode out with two sets of ponies today....First set: Annakate, Caribou and Twylah; we covered 5 miles in one hour. Second set: Illusion and Mynta. We covered 3 miles in an hour.
ReplyDeleteTotal today for the Jazz Baby: 8.02 miles
YTD: 288.02
My first miles of the year on Annakate! Only 2.15; ride cut short when Twylah had an allergic reaction to what? a wasp sting? She began switching her tail and kicking her belly as soon as we headed down the runway. Whenever Lupe got off to check her (could not find anything amiss) she stood like a statue. When Twylah went down and almost rolled on her rider, we decided to come home. :-) Annakate was wonderful and it was great to be back in her saddle. HOT day helped by Camelbak and cooling vest.....
ReplyDelete2.15 miles
Jazz has had some time off--we attended a Connected Groundwork clinic with Peggy Cummings a few weeks ago and have been focusing on groundwork and pedestal training ever since. Jazz had some "serious" body issues and had a 90 minute session with osteopathy practitioner Debbie Davies. So today was my first time on Jazz since then. I took her out of a bit and into an S-hack and was really careful to ride her as lightly as possible: no pulling, thighs and knees wide. I used a lariat neck ring to collect her a bit and stay out of her mouth. We had a great ride despite 95 degree heat index, little breeze and 52% humidity. 5.17 miles. She gaited beautifully. I'm a happy camper. :)

Had a terrific clinic with Jazz!! Back on the trails tonight for the first time since the 4-day clinic (we rode quite a bit, but I didn't bring along my GPS). Kenny/Annakate and me and Jazz covered 7.44 miles on a perfect Texas "winter" day.... low humidity and 73 degrees. Stayed off the perimeter of the pasture just in case there were hunters in adjoining fields.

Well, boo. We are on hold again. Five weeks ago I fell and dislocated my left hip, and had emergency surgery with a half hip replacement. Doing better now, walking (gimping) without a cane or chair more and more and at least going down to visit the ponies. We were just getting back in gear!! Hope to be back on horse before the end of a year. It's been a good ride!
ReplyDeleteOf course, what I meant to say was by the end of the year. This year. :-)
