Team 85 - Leather and Lace

My name is Penny and I live south of North Platte, NE.

While my kids were growing up I would spend time in the saddle almost every day.  We were either working or playing.  Sometimes the work was play!  For the past several years I have not spent much time riding.  I lost my two go to horses, Missy and Josie, and it has been an incredibly long journey for me to find the pleasure in riding since.

My goal this year is to spend more time in the saddle and once again enjoy riding.  I hope that Jezebel and Ace will enjoy my "back in the saddle again" also!

    1. Thanks, Kerri! We will both have great horses at the end of the year!

  2. Ace and I went for our first ride today. Thanks to the blog I downloaded runtastic on my phone. This app is going to work great for me (if my phone battery will take it) because it records my miles for here and my time for the AQHA ride program. Ace and I went for a short 1.6 mile to test out the new app. We will be heading out here shortly to meet up with Gypsy Runner and do some more riding. It was amazing to ride through the hay meadow and see where the deer and bunnies go by the tracks in the snow.

  3. Ace and I had a nice 3.5 ride with Gypsy Runner. I wonder if my husband would like to become the head cook so we don't starve while I'm trying to get miles in :-)

  4. Today was a breakthrough day for Jez and I. We went out for a 2.32 mile ride this morning, I had decided that come heck or high water today we would come to a mutual agreement that riding could and should be fun for both of us. We made two trips back to the round pen for a tune up but the end result was well worth it. Today was the first ride that was "relaxing. If I wouldn't add another mile to this challenge this morning's ride would be worth the world. And to think that I didn't want to ride in 29 but feels like 19 degree weather! Jez and I carried on with our wonderful day by logging 3.56 miles with Team 37 Gypsy Runner and Team 84 Slash Quarter Circle. We rode the pastures, enjoyed the wind (not), and had a nice ride. Jez finally was excited to get out and we didn't fight the whole ride. She may have some of her dam in her yet!

  11. Hardly :) You are miles ahead of me. I have just been taking advantage of the mild weather we've been getting. Ironic thing is that I start out with a mile goal and usually end up surpassing it because Jez ends up being a knothead. Guess her bad behavior may be my saving grace. I am grateful that Gypsy Runner suggested we join this. It has given me the motivation to get out and put the miles on Jez. I am getting reacquainted with the joys...and aggravations....of riding. It's been a blast so far.

Jez and I have come a long ways in our 105 miles. I have been reminded that patience is a virtue, and a requirement, when working with horses. My confidence level is increasing, which was a goal I had set. As Jez and I are out riding and we are "talking" she will sometimes shake her head no at me when I tell her what we are going to do next. I, of course, have to remind her who is more stubborn...me!

  13. serious, I am going to have to ride, lol GOOD FOR ALL OF YOU.

  14. Penny, you go girl, I agree with you that this Distance Derby is a great incentive to get out and ride, I have several horses that need to be ridden and I have finally gotten my hind end out there and been saddling up and riding. I need to start working with our colts though, I like to take them for walks, wish we could include those miles as well, lol. We need to get together and ride again.

    1. When I bid the shift I'm on I did so because it was supposed to be winter...cold, snow, windy....not 50 degrees. Oh well. We will have to hope for a nice Sunday and I can come up or maybe you guys would want to haul down to my place since you've never been here. The DD has been great incentive and I know that's why my butt is back in the saddle too. I am having a hard time staying even with you and Gypsy Runner's miles, though. Like Juanita said, quit riding :)

  15. Ya Know, I am going to ride as much as I can, for now, lol. We are going to start calving the 1st of March, then start haying first of June, if we get rain! So I am not sure how much time I can get in then. It is all fun, and I love how we can motivate each other. I am rooting for you and gypsy Runner. I don't think we are going to have a very good weekend for riding, looks like snow coming our way, but we will take it!

Jez and I have logged 116 miles so far in March. I switched over to Runtastic Pro the end of January. We have logged 65 hours of riding since then. It is no wonder that my house is suffering and the husband is forced to cook more of his meals :) He is also the one that says "Yeah, you better go riding." when I ask, halfheartedly, "Should I go riding?" I use my miles here in DD and my hours for AQHA ride program. I just received a pair of boots that I ordered using my gift certificate. Jez and I are starting to connect more and I'm enjoying my outside time. Thanks, DD for the push to ride!

  40. Juanita, don't let Brenda know but I took Ace out of the pasture and started "warming" him up. It looks like she has been doing some riding so I may need to ride my Energizer bunny horse :) Only thing is when I got him out I don't think he would have stopped! So, we ran in circles in the pen.

Dianna: After I had a chance to digest everything I had a great time too. We will need to get together and ride. Wish the Mother's Day Trail Ride would work out.

  90. 20.4 miles on 10.13.13

Rode with Gypsy Runner #37 and my granddaughter for the first 8.25 miles. Lou wasn't really ready to leave us but her Mama said she had to go home :( Rode the rest of the miles, basically, with Gypsy Runner. I finished out the ride on my granddaughter's horse. He was full of spit and vinegar and ready to go.

  92. Thanks. The fall days have been nice riding....if you ignore the wind. I have had the opportunity to ride with my granddaughters lately and that has been a joy. Gypsy Runner and I were just talking about how nice it will be to meet some of our "competitors" if there is another gathering this year. Maybe Juanita Serafini will be feeling better by then...I see on FB
that she felt like gagging yesterday :)

  94. Congratulations on jumping right up there on the leaderboard! Lucky you! Having those grand-kids to ride with :-)

  95. Thank you! You are a hard person to keep up with mile wise :) I REALLY enjoy riding with my grandkids. It does make the miles go faster and gives us some one on one time. How do you like endurance rides? I was thinking they would be boring but I watched a video and they seem like they could be interesting.

19.0 miles on 10.27.13 I had a blast riding with my daughter and granddaughter again tonight.

  96. You are too! Endurance, to be competitive - is at a much faster pace, which keeps you on your toes! I enjoy the aspect of getting a horse fit enough to finish top ten, which gives you the opportunity to show for Best Condition. Having a marked course through country new to you is nice too!

    1. I may have to try one sometime just to get a feel for it. It seems like most of the endurance/trail rides are more in the eastern part of NE. Travelling right now is kind of expensive. I have family in Bellingham. How far is that from you?

  97. Bellingham is about 60-miles north of us. Not far at all & some good riding in-between :-) But yes, traveling to the rides gets expensive. I stay closer to home now-days.

    1. I enjoy riding new areas. I am riding my granddaughter's horse right now also. We are working on his condition. His stamina is out of this world. I think he would be my go to horse for CTR or endurance if I ever get a chance to try it out. He loves to trot out and be a tourist. He is such a ham.

  102. You have been a busy lil thing, stop it. I plan on going back to my old ways and riding like hell, even in the cold, maybe, lol

  103. You go for it girl! I am less than motivated to ride in subzero temps, especially when there's a wind. Guess I'm a fair weather rider :) Hopefully it works out that I get a few miles in today. Long Distance Rider has taken advantage of our subzero temps and passed me. Dang her!
