Team 51 - Crazy Horse

My name is Sandra Kennedy.  I live in Concordia, Kansas.  I absolutely love to ride.  This is my first year to join the distance derby. Actually,  I had never even heard of such a thing until this year on horsetrailriders.com. I am very excited to try this.  I actually have no idea how many miles I put in in a year so I am doing this for myself out of curiousity. I am going to set a goal of 1,500 miles this year because I do ride a whole lot. I have no idea if this number is high or low. I will be putting in my miles on 2 horses.

The one in my profile picture is Cheyenne. She is a 16 year old mare that I have owned almost 2 years. She is an amazing horse. The other horse I will be riding is Diablo. He is a 3 year old gelding that I just bought this last October at the horse auction in Salina. He only had 45 days riding on him when I got him and I have easily put that many more on him. He is starting out very nicely and I believe he is going to turn out to be as good as Cheyenne. I want to wish everyone good luck at reaching your personal goals.

    1. Sure. Just email it to distancederby@gmail.com . Follow up with a note that you sent it. For some reason gmail has been kind of picky about thinking stuff is Spam that really isn't....

  2. I got in my first miles of the year on 1-5-2013. I had a total of 12.99 miles by my map tracker on my smart phone. We attended the Tammy Kay Zenger 1st annual memorial cattle drive. the group I was with trotted our horses 6 miles to where the rest of the riders were trailoring to to round up the cattle and move them. We were extremely glad that we put in the extra 6 miles because a lot of the horses were frisky when we started to gather the cows but our group of horses were settled down and ready to work. It was a little bit cold but was a very enjoyable day. There was a potluck and barn dance afterwards. I would highly recommend this Memorial Cattle Drive next year for anyone looking for a GREAT day!!

I rode 4.7 miles today for a total of 35.51.We had put the cattle in a holding area last night to sort them off to take some to the sale barn on Tuesday. When we got to the pens this morning something had knocked the fence down so we had to gather up cows in the section and sort them. It made for a really long day when we were sitting pretty good when we went to bed last night. Oh well a bunch of them we won't ever have to gather again after tomorrow morning.

    1. Hahahahahahahahahahaha Juanita!!!! I started off the year with my old faithful and a new 3 year old. Then we went on vacation and ended up staying waaaayyyy longer than intended. I got a horse from a friend while we were there on vacation that was being hard to get along with and was needing some miles on him badly. A few days after getting this horse from my friend, my friend was killed in a car wreck. So I have devoted a lot of miles to this horse in hopes of riding him at a memorial that is coming up on July 13th for my friend. I'm not sure as of yet if I'm going to feel good enough about riding Walt to do it. Only time will tell. I have named this horse Walt after my friend that was killed and that I got the horse from. RIP Walt Gove you will never be forgotten!!!

    2. oh, I am so sorry to read about your friend. Hugs. You are doing a wonderful memorial just by riding his horse! That is a special memory that you will always have.

We went to Kanopolis this weekend for my friend Walt's funeral. I did ride my horse "Walt" that I got from him and had named after him. He did amazing!!!! I also took my 3 1/2 year old and rode him both days. Diablo absolutely hated the deep water on Saturday and we had to fight him all the way. On Sunday, my friend took the lead rope at the first water crossing and Diablo never pulled back once so the next crossing I decided to try it alone. He crossed with a little bit of encouragement and crossed every single one afterwards. I won't say it was pretty because he thinks he has to jump in but he will get nothing but better and I was very pleased with both horses this weekend. I got up Saturday morning and rode Walt 6 miles to be sure he'd act right while riding with everyone to the chapel. He did ride good but what I was most pleased with was that he stood behind me for almost 2 hours untied and never tried to walk off or eat. He just stood there like he knew he was suppose to.
