Team 8 - Three Little Birds
My name is Rosalie Marley. I live near Washington DC now but have lived and ridden in different parts of the country (central New Mexico, Baltimore, Los Angeles, western Nebraska) over the last 30 years. I used to ride 5-6 horses a week, teach lessons, and condition at least one horse for endurance. A few years ago I somehow lost my riding nerve and have been working to get it back. I think it's back, so this year's Distance Derby is a challenge to myself to keep going!
My main ride is Tanner, a solid buckskin gelding with several years of trails and camping before I got him. He's registered as a Pleasure Saddle Horse - a registry for cross-bred gaited "using" horses. He's part Spotted Saddle Horse and part Kentucky Natural Gaited horse - and all about taking care of his rider! Of course, if the opportunity comes up to ride other smooth horses, I won't turn them down :-)
My goals for the upcoming year are modest. Get out and ride! I am shooting for a minimum average of 10 miles per week - of course, crummy weather will reduce that, but the good weather should boost it! I'd like to complete a 25 mile CTR at the end of summer. I'd like to do an organized trail ride with one or more of our local trail riding groups. Who knows what else I will take on but those are my minimum goals.
My team name is "Three Little Birds" and refers to a Bob Marley song whose refrain is "don't worry 'bout a thing - every little thing is gonna be alright".

kick your butt, lol, get riding Janurary one, I am your motivation,
ReplyDeleteTried out my phone GPS with EndoMondo - I think it was using data rather than the stored map. Will have to try another setting. But here's the track - http://www.endomondo.com/workouts/115530922
ReplyDeleteI think you must have the settings on private because it denied access on the link.
DeleteWelcome aboard!
Hoping I fixed the settings now!
ReplyDeleteStill wearing my cam boot (left ankle has to stay immobilized). Rode in my saddle without stirrups. Did the Merkle Farm route twice.

I love to ride, but I too have a fear of riding I'm trying to overcome since breaking my arm when I was riding alone. How dare you ride .01 more of a mile than me! I'll have to be on the lookout for you now! (Glad to see you are cowgirling it up!) Team 92-Karbo
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I made a smart aleck reply a few days ago but I guess blogger ate it? Anyhow, glad to see you cowgirl up too - riding is to much fun to let fear get in the way. :-)
DeleteRode Saturday - horses were fizzy so lots of schooling while we were out. Can't wait to get this boot off (hoping for next week) and actually hit a trail!

DeleteMy grandson, who is a very good rider, came over and that's how I got my ride of 4.45 miles. I'm really gonna have to watch you once you get your boot off! Team 92 Karbo
ReplyDeletewow, you are way past me now!
DeleteI'll catch you yet! :-)
That's what I'm afraid of! Karbo
DeleteGot my boot off - but need to build up to full activity (can't really use my stirrups yet but at least can rest my feet in them). Meanwhile, working on getting him to relax and travel in a more relaxed frame (Head lower, back not hollow). Sunday was pretty windy plus a show was going on - perfect opportunity to work on those goals!

Due to too many hours at work, bad weather, and a sick dad, I had a long break from riding. Today's the first day I rode with my saddle in a long time - ankle still not good enough to mount from the ground but I have a ladder ;-) Had a great ride! Need to get some hoof boots so we can get out into the woods.

Glad you were able to go for a ride - it's good for the soul. Would your ankle let you mount your horse from the off side? Team 92 Karbo
ReplyDeleteHey Karbo! I need to try off-side mounting anyway... lol with my luck I'd probably injure that one too! But it's still a good idea. You are really getting some miles in - despite your location :-) I lived in SW Nebraska until a couple of years ago - just outside Stratton.
ReplyDeleteGot a ride in Monday (President's day). This time was to try out a couple of short (I mean really short) stretches in the woods that hubby and I had cleared out. He and our dog walked along while I rode.
Still pecking away at the miles but watch out - one of these days I'll actually get some decent mileage going!

For once, got trail miles without arena miles! The barn owner is also interested in helping us blaze some new trail to get past a chunk of trail that is full of downed trees - and from there we should be able to get to the main trail! Trailer shopping is on hold for now, but getting access to the local trails will be great!

Is you leg better? Just walking around with a bum leg stinks, but riding with one has got to be the pits. Cross your fingers that warmer weather will heal it faster and make the rehab go quick.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually using your goal of riding 10 miles per week. My goal was to ride more than the 350 miles I rode last year and yours seemed it would be about right! I haven't quite kept up to it yet, but I'm tryin'. Karbo
ReplyDeleteJuanita - my leg (ankle) is mostly better - I noticed after riding tonight that it was a bit sore but for everyday, it's improving (even for stairs!) so I expect it will just be a matter of time and staying active. Thanks for asking!
ReplyDeleteKarbo - I haven't made my goal yet (I think) but am counting on making up the average once the warm weather kicks in.
I had a sad event - my Dad passed away last week, so hubby and I flew to Indiana to help arrange the funeral. This is my first ride since getting back.

Thank you Diane. He lived out of state but phoned regularly, and we visited a couple times a year.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Karbo - I am glad my sis and I made a trip out at the beginning of February and got to visit him while he was home and still feeling up to seeing us. We were able to say what we wanted to say and just sit and hold hands when he was too tired to talk.
ReplyDeleteRode yesterday - just a quickie as the weather was rapidly turning - it dropped 10 degrees over the course of 30 mins and the wind picked up. Tried out my old Argentine Snaffle - he did so well in it! I really wanted to use my english hack or a snaffle but I guess he didn't get the memo that he's supposed to like those better. All the photos I have from his earlier days show him in one, so I guess it's what he understands.

Saturday's ride presented some "schooling opportunities" for both me and Tanner. I have a tendency to "perch" forward instead of sitting up, shoulders over hips. (I think it's a fear of getting left behind, as when I do finally get my shoulders over my hips, I feel as if I'm leaning back.) Anyhow, it became very evident at one point toward the end of today's ride, as we passed the barn. Tanner thought we should be done and tried to take me to the gate (we've been practicing gate opening skills). I'd ask him to move forward but he kept backing up until I was afraid he'd hit the barn. Then I'd ask him to stop (he did) and I'd lean back a bit to tap him with my crop - and he'd actually go forward, at least until I returned to my perch position. R, who was observing all of this, filled me in afterward. It wasn't the crop so much asking him to go forward as it was my sitting up. We did finally get going forward and away from the barn and did about another mile.
ReplyDeleteNormally he's pretty generous and gives me what he knows I want, despite my position. But this time, since he really wanted to be done, he chose to take me literally. So now I have some homework - work on sitting up and providing clear direction, instead of relying on his generosity.

We got hoofboots earlier this week - tonight was our first chance to get out and ride in the woods!!! Our woods trail is a converted rails-to-trails deal with loads and loads of heavy sharp gravel - so we really needed boots. Today was only 3 miles, the first mile was one of our regular loops to get the boots well seated so we knew they were ok. The horses really enjoyed being out on a real trail - they were pretty relaxed when we returned, even though it was feeding time.

Woo hoo! did a pretty decent ride today - nearly seven and a half miles! it was kind of an exploration for both my friend and I. I'd never ridden most of these trails behind my barn - I had hand-walked my previous horse on most of them (not all in one day) but today was my first time doing these trails on horseback :-) And the first time for this horse too. Even the horde of motorbikes that came up behind us near the end didn't shake our horses (I must admit, I did hop off and gave them a piece of my mind). After they left, I let my horse chase them - he thought it was fun!

I'm still riding but have started taking coaching sessions and actually working on my position and Tanner's posture as well. That means a lot more arena work (and I mean work) than we used to do, so not as much trail work. While I don't mind including arena miles if I'm just riding, I feel funny logging them in this context. But we did get out on the trail Saturday morning - we even led most of the time!

ReplyDeleteThanks! not riding as much as I had hoped - but am riding more this year than I did last year! So that is a plus :-)
DeleteDid a lesson yesterday - getting him to go forward with some impulsion. Today I thought we'd take a more relaxed hack in the woods - but nope, he was not happy in the woods (too many bugs? who knows) Anyhow, we left that and worked in the arena again (maybe next time the woods will look easier bwahaha). Reinforced the lesson, and for fun, we hacked out in the front fields. Got a consistent nearly 4mph walk in the open, so definitely improving our walk!

We had a lesson since the last login but the weather has been too crummy to do other riding. Trying a new bit that lets him work better - he is not fussing with it (It's a shorter shanked walking horse bit, has been working in an "argentine snaffle" til now.)
ReplyDeleteYesterday's ride was in the woods, just me and my horse - no babysitter! finally getting my confidence back! Today's ride was with my friend/barnmate and lots of fun (except for the bugs ;-) ) Bit still seems to make him happy.

News flash! My riding-mate R and I are moving our horses. New place has no trails but I now have a trailer - so we will be able to try a variety of trails, plus the new barn has some trail riders to go out with.
We moved on August 1 and I took a lesson at the new place that night - but forgot to turn on my GPS, Then, both of our horses got a bit beat up the first night but nothing more than scrapes and hair loss. Tanner did get a large scrape near his loin, so Sunday I rode him in the bareback pad - he was ok but my legs were killing me! No GPS on that ride either. Today I put the saddle on - the saddle misses the nicely healing scrape - but I didn't realize how much the pad would rub. We had a great ride in the arena but toward the end, I noticed he began swishing his tail, so we stopped - turns out he had rubbed some of his scrape raw. So back to the bareback pad until it's healed better.

Sorry your guy got a scrape and even worse where the saddle rubs :-( Hope he heals fast!
ReplyDeleteThanks! That irritation from the pad really slowed down healing but it looks good now and is getting hair. I used my saddle over the last few days with no problem, so am keeping my fingers crossed that his new friends will be a little gentler now :-)
DeleteSo - nearly a month of riding in my bareback pad, mostly in the arena but a few trips around the new farm (and it has some nice hills), has really helped my balance and our communication! Over the Labor Day weekend, I rode around the farm (no real trails, so no GPS) in my saddle - discovered my improved balance, discovered that those girth buckles were a major pain AND realized I already had a longer girth that would move the buckles to a better spot. Had my lesson Tuesday - and we are ready to really ride! Am planning our first trailer-out trip to some trails this weekend and will be sure to bring the GPS for that.
ReplyDeleteHooray! finally have some miles to report! 6 of us from my barn trailered out to a nearby state park. This was my first excursion in my new trailer! We split into two groups (gaited/non-gaited) and went exploring. (This is also a big deal for me, as I have not traveled to ride in many years due to confidence issues.) Tanner has such a ground eating walk, we did the whole thing at varying speeds of walk (well, he is a Walking Horse!) and my buddy had to pop into corto a few times (which they enjoyed :-) )
ReplyDeleteDownside - this is my first trip in my brand new trailer (purchased brand new at the dealer). Bad vibration, and on the way home, while waiting at a light, somebody hopped out of their car to come back and tell me one of my trailer wheels was wobbling and squeaking - likely a bad bearing. I checked tires/wheels for heat when we got to the barn, and one was much hotter than all the others.

ReplyDeleteTrailered out again yesterday, just barn-mate and me, to Jug Bay. What a lovely place - nice footing, lots of trees, some technical areas, a few small bridges, long areas for when I'm ready to pick up speed, not too busy, and did I mention beautiful? We only did a small part of the trails, looking forward to exploring more. However, it was unusually warm and humid for this time of year, and our horses are busy building their winter woolies, so Tanner, at least, was happy to end the ride when we did.
