Team 67 - Mustang Dreams

I am located just north of Columbia, MO.  This is my first time to participate and I am very excited!  I am hoping that this will make me put what I love doing on the front burner instead of the back burner....and that is to get out and ride and enjoy nature more.

I have too many horses and most of them don't have jobs but I love them all.  The two I plan on riding are my mustangs, Tripp and Wyoming.  Tripp has been on the trails quite a bit but is still green.  Wyoming had been out on the trails a couple years ago, had a couple of years off, and is back in training again.  I would also like to ride endurance, and Wyoming is going to be the lucky stang!  This should get both of them in better shape...not to mention myself!

This is going to be so much fun!  Woo hoo!

The best thing I try to do for myself is to try to listen to the horse.  I don't mean let him take over.  I listen to how he's operating: what he's understanding or what he doesn't understand: what's bothering him and what isn't bothering him.  I try to feel what the horse is feeling and operate from where the horse is. - TD (Tom Dorrance)

Great ride in the snow. We were the first ones on the trail besides the woodsy critters. Saw a lot of tracks coming and going...makes me wonder what they were all up to. It was cold and windy, but sunny so it as bearable. What a beautiful ride! I was not quite half way thru the ride (doing same route as y-day but the opposite way) and my phone battery was at 25%. I opted to head back and get a complete track on my phone. Beautiful fun ride! Woo hoo!

Saturday my GPS quit recording at two different spots. I even tried shutting it off and turning it back on so I could start a new track so I could get over 10 miles. No such luck! Ha ha!
Sunday it recorded a whole track! Woo hoo! Great ride this weekend.

Got a later start than planned so was going to take the 4.4 mile route. Found another trail so followed it a while. I had to hustle back to the parking lot...it was almost dark when I arrived. :-)
I will ride the new trail next time to see where it comes out. I think I know...but not 100% sure. New adventures ahead! Woo hoo! It was about 50 this evening and cloudy. Beautiful time for a ride! :-)

  11. I ride a mustang also. Did you adopt yours from BLM? I adopted mine as a weanling. He is now 15 and has an incredible personality. I also have a couple of quarter horses and a shetland, but the mustang is my pride and joy.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hi Wendy, we have a few we have adopted from the BLM, and the one I have been riding was my Extreme Mustang Makeover stang from 2008. We have always adopted adult horses. My husband did adopt a yearling in 2008 because at the end of the day, he had not found an adopter yet. We also have a 32 yr old Arab I have had since she was 5, a couple crop out paints and mini's and burros. Oh, can't forget the llama. Ha! They are all fun!

Great ride! It was mid 40's, partly sunny, and peaceful. There was a group of four that were blasting through the woods laughing and carrying on...the laughter made me laugh! Tripp never thinks he needs to use unnecessary energy chasing after anybody, but he seemed to know this group was having fun, so we followed them at a good pace for a while. Supposed to rain tomorrow so I am glad I got to ride today. Woo hoo!

I left not long after the rain stopped. It is very windy and warm. It is so windy it was knocking dead branches out of trees and we got pelted with them, and with little devil winds (mini tornado) filled with leaves. Still a great ride.

First ride was in mud behind the barn. Won't do that again...too slippery.
Saturday's ride was with the bareback pad and it was very relaxing. I knew it would be a short one.
Today was with the saddle because I knew it would be longer. The goal was to do good time...fast paced walk, etc. But I met people on the trail and we talked a lot. :-)

It has been too long...after a couple blizzards, the trailer being snowed in, then rain and mud and work, I have not been out.
Saturdays ride was nice until the cold rain started. Then it was GREAT! I wish I could put the smell of a fresh rain on a photo. It was beautiful!
Today's ride was snow...snow snow snow! It was so pretty. Tripp was in a good mood so we rode longer than planned. What a great weekend!

I noticed the 3/24 and the 3/30 rides were the same miles and almost the same time. The 30th took 20 seconds longer...probably because of riding the majority of it in pouring rain. Ha! It started raining 10 - 15 minutes after I left the parking lot. Glad I had my slicker with me!

Sunday afternoon was gorgeous! I decided to ride with the bareback pad and had only planned on doing about 4 or 5 miles tops. Tripp felt good and I felt good, so we did the big loop. Woo hoo!

Funny thing....I told myself I would be happy with 100 but deep down I said I would only be happy with 200. I was telling Brian 100 in case I didn't make it. :-) You are doing great too. We have had weather challenges like most people but still are lucky enough to get on a while. :-)

My April 13th and 14th post did not come thru. User error...I did not wait to make sure the word verification did it's thing. I know I was posting it because I told my husband I couldn't eat dinner until I got this updated, ha ha! - I was getting ready to leave town for two weeks for work so I must have got in a hurry. I really did think it posted. Oh well, here is what you all missed....I was exceptionally proud on the 14th. That was Wyoming's debut ride! It has been 3 years since I have had him out. He was on edge the whole ride but did very well! It was so exciting!!!

Now I am swapping between Tripp and Wyoming, and my husband also gets to ride with me when he gets time. Love it!

Wyoming walks almost twice as fast as Tripp so the rides are very different. Different but great!!! :-)

When this started I gave myself a 100 mile goal, but inwardly I wanted 200. Here it is the middle of May and I reached that. Guess I can rest the remainder of the year. HA HA! Just kidding!

Thanks to all of the volunteers who keep this thing going. If it was not for the DD I would not have ridden in January and February as much as I did..if at all!

Saturday I rode by myself both times. Tripp was a hokey poke. We also saw a lot of other riders on this gorgeous day and we visited. I think visiting adds on more time than I realize. Then I took Wyoming out. He was nervous and jumpy, and we had a couple of baby bolts. I am not liking that...but we survived. :-)

Sunday I rode with a couple of friends and took Wyoming out. I thought he would be more calm having horse buddies with him the whole time. Nope...he was a nervous bug again. We had a 'baby bolt' again that lasted longer than yesterdays...dang I hate that! I am working on my confidence and that makes it hard. Bail or ride; bail or ride? Ha ha! Thankfully I rode...but still. If I am nervous how is he supposed to trust me? We will get there...together. :-)

I was in a funk and took 1/2 a vacation day from work. I thought it would be a nice long relaxing ride...it was a good ride but the medium sized horse flies were out in full force and it was very humid. Tripp and I both got ate up, and that is with spray on. We were cantering and they were flying beside me, then they would zoom ahead like they were alerting the rest of them! Dang!

I won't be getting any rides in for a few days. My mother-in-law passed away this morning so everyone is concentrating on family right now. Everyone is doing as well as they can be right now. She was in the hospital and Friday she refused any more treatment and wanted to go home. She got to spend her last night in her own bed. I am so thankful to God that she got to do that. She isn't in pain any more...and she can go to be with her horses that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. :-)

Took Tripp out instead of Wyoming because I knew there would be a lot of riders out Memorial Wknd. I was right. It was a good ride, met a lot of new people, and got rained on. A LOT! Ha ha!

Me: "Oh, chance of pop ups...I can deal with that."

God: "Hmmm, I think I will show her it is better to be prepared." Then it started to pour!!! Ha ha!

I can't believe how great the weather was this weekend...in JULY!!! Woo hoo! It was a great riding weekend and I saw a lot of people out and made new friends. Wyoming and Tripp both did great. My main problem with Wyoming right now is him losing his mind when we see other horses. If we start out with a group he is good. But if we start out alone he does great until he see's horse friends. We really need to figure that out. Other than that, awesome weekend!

Got some 'after work' rides in this week. Great therapy! Took the long route on Sunday again and Wyoming did great in spite of his spooks. He could have kept going. I can't wait until he settles down more because he is going to be my endurance horse. I think he will love it! :-)

I have one complaint. Horse flies. They are ferocious and have no mercy. On the flip side, Wyoming is getting used to asking me to get the ones that get centered on his rump, and he deals with me leaning back to wack them. Yep, that is my only complaint. The riding has been wonderful! Thanks to all of you volunteers who are keeping this board updated.

The GPS on my phone (anyone use My Tracks?) starting going haywire and would not turn on so I took Brian's phone to try his My Tracks out. His worked like a charm. We talked tonite and a real GPS will be in my future. Yay! We are going to uninstall My Tracks and put it back on so hopefully that will help. But if it does...don't tell him. I still want a real GPS. :-) Hee hee!

I don't like that I can't load Runkeeper to Google Earth to track myself, and I can't figure out how to e-mail it. Thank goodness for my spreadsheet.

Had some good rides after work, and a couple evenings I got a late start and rode in the dark. My balance is way off when I can't see so it was a fun challenge. I took my headlamp that has LED and a red light in it. Now the red light is cool! :-)

Lady 'stuff' kept me from riding the past couple days. Ugh! But I got a ride in today and it was gorgeous out! Took Wyoming since Tripp is healing from a swollen hock. His hock looks much better...but will give him a few more days.
Horse flies were not as bad - yay! It was very pretty out, nice breeze, and relaxing. Wyoming did very good for the most part. We are coming right along...baby steps.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I took the day off to take the mini's to the vet to have teeth done. Then I took a ride...thinking about 9/11 and what it means to many of us and what it did to some of us as Americans. I bet we all remember where we were when we heard...

    GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I have been working a lot so have not had time to ride much. Bums me out, but I won't turn my nose up at work. I took the 25th off from work and had a relaxing ride on Wy. Tonite I took Tripp and we rode half the ride in the dark. Like most people, I am very visual so keeping my balance and trusting the grass diver to keep himself upright and me not in a tree is a chore! Ha ha! It really was a great night, and I have really enjoyed the dark night rides Tripp and I have done.

Had some very nice rides on Wyoming. He is still stiff as a board but I think he is getting better. Today he actually bent his body around a tree I was going around. :-)
Today (10/6) was the coldest so far....mid 40's and I got sprinkled on. Just enough to make the wind more chilly than what it was. Still a great ride!

Took a couple of rides after work. In my mind I say "Oh, it will just be a quick ride..." then the next thing I know we are still moseying along and it is dark. I am enjoying it while I can.

Wyoming has had some saddle fit problems so I tried my husbands saddle on him. The first part of the ride he seemed a little ouchy on the front and I was not sure if he was compensating for the saddle, or feet, or both. So when I got back I checked the saddle to make sure it seemed okay (it did to me), then I decided to play with the Cavallo boots. We took another ride and he moved out much better! So it was the feet...altho I can't figure out why. Maybe bruises from all the nuts that are falling from trees? The boot fit (fronts only) were not the best, but it gave me a good idea of what we need to do.

    1. Lady I am just so darn proud of the miles you are riding. Just awesome to see. With you in spirit, cause I don't think we are gonna make it together this year. Next year for sure. Happy trails. April and Nevada.

I rode during the week again, and took off Friday...three day weekend! Friday and Saturday I was not on a time schedule so could go go go. I met a lady who rode her first and only horse at age 60. Saturday I took Tripp to their camp area and let her ride him. She had a blast...and so did I!
It was an awesome beginning to a long weekend!

I thought I better hurry up and get these miles recorded before I lose them. It has been a very crazy week.....hoping to ride this weekend! Hope everyone is doing well!

The short ride was on the Katy Trail in Sedalia. I had a couple of hours of free time after meeting a friend for a Renegade Hoof Boot fitting (can't wait to order some!) First time on this trail and I would love to do it again; start early one day and just go and go.....

The long ride was at the conservation area again. I started early and was not on a time schedule. I did the long route with an extra loop in the mix...it was fun. Big break through! Three times we had horses go by us from the opposite direction and I stayed on him! I normally get off when he loses his mind and I just take off walking him like it is no big deal. This time I tapped into the inner brave confident me and I let him watch them go by, then I pointed him the direction I wanted to go. HE WENT! It was not pretty the whole time, but he tried so hard and succeeded! AAAHHHH!!!! That is huge for us! Three times!!! Yay!!!! It was such a great ride - I could not stop smiling! We also rode by the shooting range where they were sighting in deer rifles and a cannon. Okay, not really, but it sure sounded like one!

Will add Sunday tomorrow when I hear back from riding friend.

Well, pulled a stupid human trick and broke my wrist coming off Wyoming. Wrist got caught under me and took weight. Freak thing. A metal plate and a couple screws are my new internal bling for now. Other than this had great rides with friends in KS. Unless taking my horses for walks count, this will be it for the year.

I want to thank all of the volunteers keeping track of us. I pushed myself to ride more than I would have; I did not put myself on the back burner as much as before. My husband was great too...we would get home late from work and he would kick me and a horse out the door! I learned about GPS apps and how they can sometimes be cranky. Ha ha!

Keep riding everyone and be safe!

Now on to getting this wrist healed so I can get ready for next year.
